On August 14th, 2021, a deadly 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Haiti, roughly 78 miles or 125 km west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Mobilizing swiftly, teams of local Tzu Chi Haiti volunteers in Les Cayes began their assessment to ascertain survivors’ needs and what aid may be most effectively delivered. With local assessment missions underway, volunteers from Tzu Chi’s U.S. Headquarters in California began assembling medical kits on August 20th.

Since 2001, Tzu Chi USA's Fresno Mobile Clinic has traveled throughout rural areas in Fresno, California, committed to helping low-income residents meet their medical needs. The team has also inspired local community groups, medical professionals, and community residents to participate in volunteer work through these regular community clinics. The Fresno Mobile Clinic has now been stationed in Central California for 20 years, and volunteers continue to pursue progress, always reminding themselves that there is still room for further improvement.

In the summer of July 2021, the state of California lifted most of its COVID-19 restrictions, and Tzu Chi USA’s community clinic, which had shut its doors for more than one year amid public health precautions, reopened again. The initial opening provided free check-ups to volunteers to ensure wellness at community events.

To help older Asian Americans receive the COVID-19 vaccine, doctors from Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) in Las Vegas worked together with the community to obtain 300 doses of the vaccine. Tzu Chi’s vaccination event was successfully completed in an orderly manner, and in this difficult time, the positive energy and compassion delivered a welcome warmth that soothed the heartache brought forth by COVID-19, enabling residents to feel that hope is indeed still on the horizon.

As the U.S. begins to expand the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, the Chinese American Independent Practice Association (CAIPA) in New York collaborated with the Department of Health to set up a temporary vaccination site at Flushing Town Hall. To help complete the task, Tzu Chi New York called upon the support of volunteers so those most in need could get the care they deserve, and on March 12th and 13th, 550 doses of the vaccine were provided to the public.
