Tzu Chi has enhanced its Oakland location to make it a multi-functional Service Center. Along with the upgrade, the Oakland team brought in a new dentistry and chiropractic care services to better serve their patients. The annual free clinic held on April 22, 2022, focused on underserved residents from the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
After two years without in-person services, residents of Bakersfield, CA were thrilled to have Tzu Chi’s medical team visit their community. Many patients came to the free clinic in dire need of medical attention as on-site care had been halted due to the pandemic. The event was heavily trafficked, furthering the team’s mission to host more free clinics in the near future.
The pandemic halted in-person services for Tzu Chi Medical’s clinics, leaving underserved communities without the critical care they had grown to rely on. Though the team was able to send medications via mail and help in any way possible, the two-year stall was difficult to navigate. Residents in San Bernardino and Cupertino were grateful to be able to schedule appointments and visit the clinics for in-person care.
The Tzu Chi Medical Foundation has become a well-rounded resource for communities in need (on wheels). The branch of Global Tzu Chi offers free, mobile clinics to underserved areas who are in need of medical attention in several different disciplines. With the help of doctors, dentists, chiropractors, opthamologists, and volunteers, Tzu Chi is able to provide residents and their families with quality care many of them haven’t seen in years.

It was a journey of over a hundred miles going from Orlando to Gainesville. And yet, it was a joy to undertake for the volunteers from Tzu Chi USA’s Orlando Service Center, knowing the relief it would bring to the staff at two healthcare facilities in Gainesville. Such aid initiatives are continually taking place nationwide during the pandemic.
As volunteers set up their booth in front of The Tzu Chi Alhambra Medical Center in Southern California, a slew of visitors showed up to collect pandemic-prevention safety supplies. Some attendants had heard about the event through the media, others were leaving their appointments at the clinic, and several were just passing by the event and became curious. Volunteers met people who were in need of supplies for different reasons, but their goal was the same: to protect themselves and those they love from contracting COVID-19.
As the number of COVID-19 infections slowed in the U.S., Tzu Chi volunteers resumed the Mobile Vision Clinic in school districts in El Monte, CA, where they prescribed new eyeglasses for students from disadvantaged families. The kids couldn’t wait to put on their new glasses, and laughed heartily behind their masks, now that they could see the world clearly again.
As digital learning became the norm during the pandemic, children were straining their eyes more and lacking free services from their schools. Even before the onset of COVID-19, many students didn’t receive the proper vision care needed to succeed. Tzu Chi’s Mobile Vision Clinic brings optometrists on-site to schools, delivering top of the line services to students who need it most. In October of 2021, students at Walter Francis Bishop Elementary were able to get their eyesight checked and many of them were excited at the prospect of receiving free glasses.
